March 13-16

SEMINAR CONTENT

This workshop and seminar is suitable for participants with or without previous butoh experience.

Butoh
(4 days, 3 hours a day)

In Butoh classes we will explore a theme that Kan has been developing for more than 40 years: «What is your dance?»

Our themes to work in the classes will be:
*How the atmosphere is created. How to carry the atmosphere.
*Practice the natural/neutral.
*Qualities of movement.
*Kan’s choreography where he gave the form to the essence of his principles.
*Butoh-notations as a creative method of butoh
Noh theatre seminar
(4 days, 2 hours a day)

This Noh Theater research seminar will be based on the dance scene from the Noh play 熊野/«Yuya», with Katsura Kan, we will study the traditional principles of performing arts.
Special attention will be paid to the practice of chanting, as the choir of the Noh Theater sings a story while accompanying the dance. This communication between chanting and dance is where the real sense of dance is born (舞/MAI).

We will learn the forms from the «dictionary» of the Noh theater, their sequence in the dance of Yuya, and the basis of the technique how to carry the atmosphere — suriashi step.
In this seminar we will begin and continue to learn: 型/KATA 舞/MAI 序破急/JO-HA-KYU 残心/ZANSHIN
Lectures by Katsura Kan:

1. «What is butoh?» (butoh in the context of post-war, post-modern and contemporary art)

2. «Butoh vs. Noh: traditional principles for contemporary art»
